| This is an excellent old testament survey. Deals with historical issues, authorship issues, content and much more. Definitely a resource to educate one about the old testament writings. |

I just finished this book for a college course. I admit it had a lot of useful information. But, from a Christian standpoint the authors do not take a positive or powerful enough stand on some serious issues. It's almost as if they give the unbelieving worldviews and theories too much credit. They act as if the unbelieving theories about the bible should be respected. Sure, at points in their arguments they mention (barely) in passing that they do not agree (sort of), but, they do not throw down the gauntlet and really challenge these unbelieving worldviews and seriously expose them for their weaknesses. Of course these men are wonderful scholars. But, they are supposed to be "Christian" scholars and are therefore commanded to contend for the faith. Obviously they make attempts at this in the book. However, I do not believe they did it strong enough.
If you were trying to get this book to learn as well as be edified... I would seriously try to persuade you otherwise. Not Spiritually uplifting. |

| I am extremely pleased with this book. It is a scholarly source of information that can be utilized comfortably in a bible study setting as well as in a seminary level of academics. Well done. |

Of the half dozen Old Testament Introductions and Surveys that I own, this text by Hill and Walton is consistently the one that is most useful and satisfying.
There are several features that I appreciate about this work:
1. Consistent excellence. Many Old Testament Introductions have both strong and weak sections. This Survey is solid and helpful at every turn. For this reason, if you could have only one Old Testament Survey - this is the own to buy.
2. This work is well written and edited. The clear prose is a joy to read and the text has a layout that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
3. While Biblical themes are made clear throughout this Survey, the purpose is unquestionably to help the student understand the text of Scripture. Rather than using this Survey to push their individual hobby-horses, Hill and Walton have kept the focus consistently on understanding the text of Scripture. The student will not come away saying: "Hill and Walton say ..." but rather "Now I understand that Deuteronomy says ..." This is no small achievement.
For those who are looking for a trustworthy guide to help them thoughtfully engage and better understand the Old Testament - this is it.
For professors, this is the Old Testament Survey to assign. You will be delighted with the clarity and solid scholarship. Your students will have a valuable resource that they will use throughout their lives. |
