| I am a lay pastor with a modest amount of classroom training. This series is very useful for anyone - whether they are a degreed preacher, someone like me, or an individual studying God's Word for themselves. I like the practical, personal aspect of the commentary and that fact makes them very useful. So far, I have only used the commentary on Philemon, but have several other volumes which I have perused at some length. The original context commentary is outstanding. I agree, however with Mr. Choy in his comments about the bridging contexts, and like him, have figured out a way to overcome and use them. I have found the contemporary significance section great for concluding my sermons. I only give it 4 stars rather than 5 because of the layout. Garland gives you three sections for each biblical section; (1) original meaning, (2) bridging contexts, and (3) contemporary significance. These sections are great except they are not broken into preaching portions. If you preach a paragraph at a time you'll find yourself flipping back and forth often. This is not a big deal, however, as you can just use a small sticky note for each section and move them as needed.
Other than the format Garland's work is excellent. He goes appropriately into the Greek language in a helpful way, brings up significant background information and really helps the reader think through the contemporary significance. | The NIV application series is overall great. This particular one by Garland is wonderful. Also owning the Word Biblical Commentary of the same books by O'Brien (which is a fairly technical commentary), gives me greater appreciation of Garland's ability to touch on the technical but also bring things back into the text in order to make it applicable to people. This Particular one is the only one of the series that I have, but I know Garland did the one of Mark and I have used it and some others in the series. They are all great.
