Reviews - What do our customers think?
An excellent book Apr 14, 2010
This is an eleven week study by Cynthia Heald. I really enjoyed my eleven week study with this book. The book starts out by teaching us how God is faithful. Cynthia uses a lot of scripture to show us how God is faithful. I was able to go through each chapter a little each day and meditate on the scriptures that she has you look up. This is something that can be done in one sitting if you have about half an hour to an hour. I felt very refreshed and closer to God at the end of the eleven weeks and I am looking forward to getting some of her other eleven week studies.
Review - Becoming a Woman of Faith Feb 6, 2010
One in her Becoming a Woman of [...] series, Cynthia Heald examines the issue of faith in Becoming a Woman of Faith. In this volume, Heald examines the question of faith, doubt, and how we can increase our faith in God. The book is arranged in 11 chapters, each dealing with a different idea or area of faith. Heald starts with showing you how God proves he is faithful. She then walks through overcoming doubt, how we can put faith into action, how to keep our faith going, and several other areas of faith.
I love that Heald takes an in-depth approach to faith and provides many, many examples in scripture throughout the study. She interjects personal thoughts on faith throughout the study as well. There are scriptures for memorization and suggestions for ways to increase our faith.
I will be the first to tell you that I am not a Bible scholar. I need more direction when it comes to studying and understanding God's word. From that perspective, Heald's book along does not offer this. I think it would work much better for someone who has a much more in-depth working knowledge of God's word. For beginners, it could leave you wanting more. In all fairness, Heald's book does state up front that some additional references (Bible commentary, study Bible with references, etc) can be helpful when going through this study.
Still, I think beginners can still get some insight into walking in faith, even if it is a little ahead of where a beginner would be in studying the Bible. There are a lot of thought-provoking questions that really do a great job of having the reader study and ponder the meaning of God's word, leaving you with more knowledge and understanding than you had in the beginning. I would certainly recommend this book and will be looking into other books in this series.

Bible Study on Prayer Jan 25, 2010
Cynthia Heald has offered a fresh approach to the difficult topic of faith. She tackles God's faithfulness, our doubt, testing, the shield of faith and heroes of the faith. She uses her own experiences combined with quotes from Scripture and great people of faith to demonstrate God's love and faithfulness.
This 11-chapter study can be completed as an individual study or a group study. You can complete it at your own pace and each chapter is filled with scripture references with examples of how faith was lived out in the Bible and quotes from people of faith used to inspire us and make us think about our faith. She also includes her own experiences, short comings and successes.
I enjoyed this study. It's a great study on faith and one that will renew your faith and encourage you to keep seeking God and His words. It takes about 30-45 minutes for each session depending on how in-depth you want to study.
I recommend this to any woman searching for a personal Bible study. I would also recommend as an excellent small group study. This is truly an enjoyable and thought-provoking study on the exercise of faith.
Great Personal Bible Study Jan 22, 2010
I just finished this Bible Study this morning. It is the second one that I've done by Cynthia Heald in recent months. I was so excited to begin it. And I know why. Cynthia Heald is a wise woman. This Bible Study is similar to the Becoming a Woman of Grace study. It is more focused on God's Word than on Mrs. Heald giving her thoughts about the Word. And I appreciate that. But, I love what she has to share. Her thoughts are candid and honest and encouraging. The quotes she includes are worth remembering and contemplating. This study addresses doubt, testing, walking by faith, and staying strong in our faith.
The chapter on doubt was especially good. I'd like to include a sample of how she writes... "After many years of walking with the Lord, I have experienced countless testings. I can say that with every test came the way of escape--a whispered Scripture in my heart to guide or encourage me or a check in my spirit to turn away from what I was about to do. I was given a way out, but it was always my choice whether or not to take it. If you find yourself telling God that the testing is too great or it's overwhelming you, perhaps it's a signal that you are trying to face it in your own strength instead of His. In God's mysterious way, He sets a limit on the test--God will allow only what will strengthen your faith, not tear it down, if you turn to Him for help." p.65 I like how she puts things. It's straight to the point, but not watered down.
Another example of how she writes is: "I become so focused on myself and the strength I need to live daily that I forget that "He will cover you with his feathers...His faithful promises are your armor and protection." Psalm 91:4 NLT"" p.56 She is honest about her own heart and her own struggles yet she keeps her eyes on the Lord.
This Bible study has encouraged me so much this past month and challenged me to remember the truths I know about what it means to walk by faith--to live out my faith--and to seek to glorify God daily by having faith in Him.
The only thing that puzzled me is why she chose to quote from the NLT when she quoted from scripture. It seems that a lot of studies are quoting it these days and it's not the translation I usually read because the NLT did go the way of gender neutral language (from what I understand--I don't have a copy of it) and it is much more of a paraphrase than other versions of the Bible. It doesn't take away from this study for me though because she only quotes scripture once in a while. Almost all of the time, it is for the reader to look up the scripture for herself.
I do highly recommend this study. It is the best Bible study series for women that I've done in a long time. I did receive this book as a complimentary copy from Navpress, though I would have purchased it myself.
Great for New Christians or Busy Women Jan 16, 2010
Becoming a Woman of Faith" is an impressive look at developing a faith based life in Jesus Christ. Perfect for a "quick" bible study or for short bible study groups, Becoming a Woman of Faith" provides a look at what it means to be a follower of Christ beyond just knowing the right scripture to use.
Filled with personal ancedotes from the author and plenty of space for personal reflections, I enjoyed readingBecoming a Woman of Faith" and like the fact that this is perfect for going on vacations or trips and still being able to have a bible study to work on without concern of losing pace.
Ms. Heald provides notable quotes from noted individuals as A.W. Tozer, while in between it all, really having the individual deal into topics of what is having faith and how to use personal struggles to grow one's faith.
Something that came to mind as well as I read throughBecoming a Woman of Faith" was the fact that Becoming a Woman of Faith" makes a great gift idea as well, for new or even Christians who might have fallen off their walk and help them learn the basic of building a strong faith based in and through our Heavenly Father.
Well written, easy to carry in a purse or tote back, Becoming a Woman of Faith" , I highly recommend this for moms on the go and looking for bible studies that are accomodating for a busy schedule, for women to take on trips or just for a gift.
