Reviews - What do our customers think?
Great Book  Jun 11, 2007
First, a word to the negative reviewers.
I'm reminded of a quote I heard a few years ago, on another topic, but it fits very well here - "everyone is entitled to their own opinion, as long as it's exactly the same as my own." I don't know how the authors could have made it any more obvious on the front cover that this book was written from a Christian point of view. You were fairly warned, so why did you even read it if you're going to be so shocked and offended at any mention of Christian ideas? I've read books on evolution, but I've never given a poor review to any of them based solely on the fact that the author doesn't believe the same thing I do, let alone such insulting and hate filled comments I've seen for nearly every review I've read for books with a creationist viewpoint.
On to the book...
I thought it was very well written. The illustrations were nicely done, and I loved the little dodo bird with his comments throughout the book. Part two is the section for parents and older children that serves as sort of a mini-commentary on the first eleven chapters of the book of Genesis. Part three is a repeat of part one, with the pictures in black and white, meant to be used as a coloring book.

Child abuse in ink  Feb 4, 2007
I found this book in a dentist's office and ran through it in about five minutes. It seemed to me that telling little children lies about how the world is and how it works is a form of child abuse: it innoculates children against education, knowledge, and critical thinking, and thus it renders children less able to live successfully in the real world.

We must all live in the modern world: trying to force one's children to live in the 3rd century by infecting them with this book does them vast harm, and it inflicts upon them a heavy burden that they will be forced to carry until they find the intellectual, moral, and spiritual strength to shrug off in their adult years.

In order for children to grow up and complete in the world, they must have basic skills including how to think. This book is an ugly attempt to undermine that skill. Worse, we must compete in the global market if our society is to survive: teaching children occult-based lies is a danger to society.

A is for Absurd  Sep 26, 2006
Kenneth Alfred Ham has a whole tribe of imaginary friends. One of them is called Adam. Did you know that Adam had a pet dinosaur? Ken and Adam talk a lot - but not in a voice that you or I can hear - so they wrote a fantastic book called "A is for Adam" and expect children everywhere to believe the tall tales and outlandish stories it contains. Because Ken and Adam say that unless children believe every last word they will roast in flame for ever and ever...

The anti-rationality, anti-sanity, anti-science dreck contained in this book is detrimental to minds of any age, but special precautions should be taken to ensure that "A is for Adam" is kept away from children by any responsible and caring adult. Please keep the following letters in mind since they explain everything you need to know about this slick but sick little book:

A is for Agendas twisted and strange. B is for Baseless distortions and claims. C is for Created as in made up from scratch. D is for Desperation at which the author will snatch. E is for Evidence which is never supplied. F is for Facts simply brushed aside. G is for Grasping often at straws. H is for Holes into which Ham frequently falls. I is Idiocy strident and loud. J is for Jackals that prey on young minds. K is for Knowing that his assertions are blind. L is for Lies simple and plain. M is for Mendacity in the very same vein. N is for Nothing presented is true. P is for Pimping this absurd worldview. Q is for Questions and more than a few. R is for Reality as in left behind. S is for Science profaned and maligned. T is for Truth twisted beyond recognition. U is for Unsupported by any conviction. V is for Verity which is completely lacking. W is for Whoppers told without redaction. X is for Xenophobic towards any dissent. Y is Yawning credibility gaps extent. Finally Z is for Zilch, the value of this book. Don't waste your time, don't give it a look.

"A is for Adam" is little more than beyond lunatic-fringe fundamentalist Young Earth Creationist propaganda and histrionics aimed at defenseless, impressionable, and innocent children. The cynicism of this ploy is standard operating procedure for one Kenneth Alfred Ham. All of his published works (for children or adults) singularly fail to distinguish fact from fancy. Also avoid "D is for Dinosaur" (reviewed separately).

Do your children a favor - instead of serving up some half-baked Ham how about the Dr. Seuss classic Green Eggs and Ham (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books). Your children will be forever grateful.

More ham-handed nonsense from the Hams  Nov 27, 2005
If it weren't for its anti-science agenda, "A is for Adam" would be a well-put-together piece of work. The illustrations by Dan Lietha are colorful, comical and engaging. The writing is simple and straightforward.

But the agenda!

Interspersed with a rather straight telling of the story of the Garden of Eden are some real howlers. The biblical Behemoth was a dinosaur; dodos, dinosaurs, mammoths and humans lived together on Noah's Ark; brothers and sisters (Adam and Eve's children) could marry licitly (though without scriptural attestation) in the early days of humanity. Every fact is arrayed carefully to "explain" some problem with a literalist view of Scripture. I will give Ham credit for including a four-legged snake (as clearly implied by Genesis) as the tempter of Eve.

The back of the book includes black-and-white outlines of the book's illustrations, perfect for photocopying for Sunday School coloring. There is also a parent and teacher section that lays out the basis for Ham's odd assertions. Dog breeds, he insists, are not due to evolution, but to the fact that God put lots of information into dog genes. Ham thus believes in genes, but evidently not in the mutability that gave rise to the breeds, or the odd fact that the various dog breeds have almost identical genes. There is something unseemly in efforts to co-opt some parts of science while denying other aspects that are less comforting, but just as reliable.

Like Ham's "D is for Dinosaur," this book is an attempt to uphold the literalist interpretation of the Bible. While many other denominations have made peace with the truth of science, there's a minority of humanity that will continue rejecting the evidence of their eyes. This, sadly, they consider "faith." Ham's purpose is to placate this minority and give it "evidence" for continuing its willful blindness. The question is whether this is the reason that God give us brains.

A Is for Adam: The Gospel from Genesis  Oct 8, 2005
This is the best book that summarizes the whole Bible. It makes the Bible clear to young children and adults alike! It is a great book to keep for many years. The back of the book tells you how to make it more interesting and more informative for the older children. My 4 year old loves it and I am learning things from it too! This book is also great for a series of Sunday School lessons.
