Breathtakingly beautiful, inspiring and faith-stirring... Mar 2, 2010
"Abide With Me - A Photographic Journey Through Great British Hymns";let me tell you, I enjoyed the abiding!
The photographs are truly amazing, though they are not why I initially wanted to read the book. I read a book a year or so ago that was in some way related to the backstory of a famous hymn, and I was really touched by the truth behind it. So, I saw the title of this book and figured it would be interesting. Having been brought up in a traditional Protestant church, I wondered if I might be familiar with any of the hymns mentioned...Allow me to say that "familiar" does not even begin to convey...
What a pleasure it was, to read about the authors of these famous hymns: their lives, the circumstances in which they wrote, how they came to their calling, and their home sites and churches! And speaking of "sights"....let's get back to those photographs! They are just so, so, so beautiful, and they support the information quite well. Some of my favorite stories include the ones for "Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love", "Take my life and let it be" (whose writer, by the way, Ms. Frances Ridley Havergal, turned down SEVEN marriage proposals so that she could focus on hymnwriting and music!), and also "Just as I am" (to name only a few).
Did you know that many hymn writers were preachers who often wrote these hymns to coincide with their next sermon? Did you know that "Onward Christian Soldiers" was written, in fact, to ensure that children would keep up the pace as they marched behind their pastor one Sunday? (Sabine Baring-Gould)
If you love travel at all, have a hankering to see ancient stone buildings and deep green countrysides, this book will certainly cause you to drool -tastefully, of course. It may also stir your faith to hear of these wonderfully dedicated disciples and how they brought us the musical treasures we have now...Many of us love more contemporary praise and worship music now, but who of us who had the luxury of growing up, even absent-mindedly, in some kind of church as a kid, will not feel even the slightest bit of "home-comfort" feeling when reading about these songs and hearing them in our heads?
Oh! I almost forgot! You don't just have to hear them in your heads! The book comes with a CD of the hymns! Wow, huh?!! Quite honestly, that really helped, too, as there were some hymns and poems I hadn't heard before, so I enjoyed the added bonus!
To sum up, I found the book well-written, very interesting and faith stirring, and the bonuses of picture and song absolutely icing-on-the-cake. (It was written by John H. Parker; photography by Paul Seawright, both amazing artists in their own right. Be sure to read the "About the Authors" section!)
Meaningful Jan 30, 2010
The book is very meaningful. One just wants to sit down and read each
biography as the song is being sung. It is a wonderful book!!
My mother is from England, but all her relatives still live there.
I have been to Olney where John Newton wrote, "Amazing Grace".
I am very happy to have this book!

A trip down memory lane for a guy raised with the hymns of the Faith as a kid. The photography is awesome and yet very serene - a reminder of the Lord of Creation and just all in all, well done!
HYMNS YOU CAN REMEMBER AND SING FROM MEMORY Oct 1, 2009
A beautifully written and photographed book including a CD of the Hymns discussed in the book. With such a plethora of meaningless religious songs that are impossible to sing, remember the lyrics, and questionable Biblically in use today, it is indeed wonderful that Dr. John Parker of David Lipscomb College of Nashville, Tennessee is reaching back into those vaults of religious and spiritual hymns that have brought so many consolation and solace throughout the centuries. These Hymns once sung, are remembered throughout one's lifetime, with melodies that are an inspiration to hear and sing and increase in meaning over the years. O Happy Day is also included in the list of Hymns, and although simplistic in sound and has one of the most significant and meaningful lyrics of possibly any Christian Hymn ever written. Rarely heard or sung today, O Happy Day was especially wonderful to again hear this easily sung Hymn today and realize its' meaning has greatly increased with the passage of time from my childhood when it was primarily sung at Vacation Bible School, and occasionally then in the Churches.
These are hymns that have lyrics and melodies that are easily sung, remembered, and most of all stay with an individual throughout their lifetime. The vast majority of the newer religious music today is not inspirational, hard to sing for anyone but the singer (if recorded), and leaves very little lasting impact upon those singing the songs today. I hope and pray this book and CD will bring about a revival of the older hymns that have withstood the tests of time and are seemingly out of favor and forgotten today. This is an age in sore need of hymns that have lyrics and melodies which are easily remembered, Biblically based, and inspire a wide audience of Christians and people of other faiths.
Gorgeous book, wonderful music Oct 1, 2009
A gorgeous book that shares the stories of how and where some of Christianity's favorite hymns were written. The photographs of England and Wales are breathtaking. It's a beautiful coffee table-type book and one that I have enjoyed reading and perusing on many a Sunday morning as I wait to go to church.
The CD that is included is wonderful. Ray Walker's version of Amazing Grace gives me chills and the choral version of Abide with Me is simply stunning.
My only complaint is that I wish the captions were included with each photo. There is a listing of photo captions at the back of the book, but I wish that each photo was captioned on its page. A beautiful addition to any music lover's library.
