Simple and direct teaching about a controversial topic  Nov 3, 2005
There is a lot of disagreement over the topic this book discusses. I am thankful that RA Torrey does a great job of presenting how the baptism with the Holy Spirit works based on what Scripture teaches.

He really does an excellent job explaining the following topics:
1. What the Baptism is and what it does
2. How the Baptism can be obtained
3. Refilling with the Holy Spirit
4. How spiritual power is lost

Given all the confusion and discussion about this doctrine, I think it is essential that Christians investigate the topic and decide what to believe. Torrey's book is an excellent starting point for those who seek to learn more.
Torrey's Theology of Spirit Baptism  Apr 18, 2005
Many today wonder if R.A. Torrey were alive would he identify himself with the charismatic movement or would he avoid the termonology? I believe he would probably not be a charismatic and would probably even be an anti-charismatic from some of his views on the early Pentecostals. However, this book will make you wonder yourself.

In this work, Torrey gives his biblical understanding of the second work of grace with the baptism with the Holy Ghost. Torrey believes that every Christian receives the Spirit at salvation (Romans 8:9) but not every Christian is baptized with the Holy Spirit (Luke 24:49). He believes the "Promise of the Father" (Acts 1:4) is for every Christian who will tarry and pray for the Baptism (Luke 11:13).

Ironically, Torrey's book is now widely read by Pentecostals because of his second work teaching. Torrey's understanding came from his revivalist views along with D.L. Moody and other late 19th century revivalist. It set the stage for the early charismatic movement although Torrey distinced himself from the early Pentecostals as did A.B. Simpson.

Overall I would highly recommend you reading this book even if you differ with Torrey's baptism language (filled vs. baptized) or his second work of grace view. The book does offer a challenge to us to be used mightily by God (Acts 1:8) and to trust in the power of the Holy Spirit and not the strength or wisdom of men (1 Cor. 2:1-5).
Avoiding the Charismatic Trend  May 21, 2003
This book is an easy read and a good tool to see the simple teaching of the Bible concerning the need for the power of God in evangelism. The only thing is some might be led to think that the power of God has to do with our unbiblically, misinformed Charismatic friends.
Clear And Useful  Jun 27, 2002
The title of R.A. Torrey's book suggest something along the lines of a Charasmatic experience, involving speaking in tongues and emotional hype. But he suprises the reader with a thoughtful look at how the Holy Spirit should opperate in the lives of true Christians. There are certain gifts that men are born with, and many lay dorment until the Holy Spirit awakens them. This book challenges people to awaken their God given gifts (all good gifts are from God and given even to those who are not Christians). Whether it is leadership (rom 12:8), teaching (Rom 12:7), craftsmanship (Exodus 31:2), or other gifts, we must let the Holy Spirit mold them to their optimum.

Kudo's to the author for an insightful and inspiring work. Although I disagree with the title, and would prefer the term "Being Filled With the Spirit (Eph 5:15-18 and Acts 4:24-31)"

Clear and simple, yet so powerful  May 4, 2000
Torrey's "The Baptism with the Holy Spirit" is straight-forward, easy to read (and it doesn't take long to read it either), clear and exciting. Taken from Scripture, the book offers life-changing truths that no christian can do without. If you desire to experience the abundant life promised by Jesus; if you're hungry for God and willing to give everything to Him and receive everything He desires to give you, or if you want to understand and/or receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, I highly recommend this book.
