Overview When Steven Curtis Chapman makes an album, it?s not just a random selection of songs. It is a collection of stories, of chapters from his life. The past few years have brought joy and sorrow. Many times there have been more questions than answers. Chapman has captured these tears and triumphs on Declaration.
The songs chronicle Chapman?s journey in pursuit of a deeper walk with God. He celebrates the joy of life in Christ in ?Declaration of Dependence,? ?Jesus Is Life? and ?Live Out Loud.? He welcomes the trials of life in ?Bring It On? and yearns for more faith in ?God Follower? and ?Magnificent Obsession.?
The difficult days have drawn Chapman closer to his Creator. Chapman says, ?The last couple of years the one prayer I?ve prayed more than any is ?Lord I believe, help my unbelief.? Even kind of harkening back to the words of Job saying, even if he slays me I?m still going to trust Him. In the last season of life I?ve watched friends and people I love and really care about walk through some painful things and those things have really marked me. They?ve really challenged my faith. Some of these things have left me without responses other than saying I need to go back and just really make this declaration of my faith, of what my faith is in. Is my faith in my faith or is it really in the person of Jesus Christ, in his truth and in His Word.?

I really like Steven Curtis Chapman's songs. The music is very good guitar-driven rhythms and the lyrics are great. This Greatest Hits cd captures the best songs from the first half of his career (First Hand to Signs of Life). I wish it would have included "Let Us Pray" and "I Will Not Go Quietly", but other than that I found it to be a wonderful way to hear a lot of his songs. This CD is a great place to start you SCC collection; I'm sure Greatest Hits 2 is in the working to gather songs from his latest cds (Speechless, Declaration, All About Love, and All Things New). Now go out and get it! (I would have given it 4.5 stars but this site does not allow that yet!)
the best of the early years Oct 12, 2004
This collection contains some of the strongest songs of Steven Curtis Chapman's early career, and serves as a launching pad for all the albums to come. He has grown in strength and confidence over the years, and this album singles out those tracks that have captured him at his peak through each stage.
Two brand new tracks, Not Home Yet and I Am Found In You, give us a glimpse of the Steven Curtis Chapman to come - a much more audibly passionate and uninhibited artist than when he first started out. New versions of Lord of the Dance and The Walk (recorded at Abbey Road Studios) start to capture some of the energy found in Chapman's live performances.
With so many excellent songs to choose from, it must have been difficult to narrow it down to these 14 tracks. You may be surprised at some of the songs that are missing, but you definitely won't be disappointed with any of the ones that made the cut.

While, I'm not a "marching in line" conventional, conservative type Christian, I can appreciate Steven's heartfelt melodies and searching lyrics. In some of his lyrics I find an innocence that is refreshing, refreshing in this day and age when a lot of people assume they KNOW all the answers. He is less arrogant than some of the other contemporary Christian singers.
Buy and Enjoy! Apr 8, 2004
Anyone who even mildly likes Steven Curtis Chapman will not be disappointed with his best hits collection.
While my personal favorite is The Great Adventure, the other songs in the cd are great also. Among the other hits are: For The Sake of the Call, Heaven in the Real World, I Will Be Here, and More to This Life.
All in all, a highly recommended cd containing an excellent collection of songs!
Christian rock worth playing on mainstream radio. Jan 7, 2003
Mr. Chapman alternates between praising God and exploring the simple joy/reward of the Christian lifestyle in this toe tapping collection that ranges from ballads to harder edge rock. Being a Greatest Hits collection means there isn't a loser to be found, just an hour or so of good, finger snapping/head nodding music to be savored. Recommended.
