EXCELLENT! Jan 4, 2007
This dictionary has so much more information then Strongs. It really expands the meaning of words and helps give a more accurate understanding of scripture.
Tremendously Valuable Resource Apr 5, 2004
I find this to be a wonderful supplement to my reading of the New Testament. Like nearly everyone, I don't read Greek. However, I know that the New Testament was written in that language. This book gives the King James Version in English with the Strong reference numbers above each word and the Greek for that verse in the margin. After you read in here for awhile you begin to recognize and recognize Greek words. That feels really cool.
In the back of the book are several useful aids. First there are some grammatical aids and a guide to transliteration (which helps if you are going to try and sound out the Greek). Next comes the editor's own Lexical Aids to the New Testament. This is incredibly useful. If the Strong number is in boldface you can look the number up in this section and find an extended discussion of the word's meaning and use in the New Testament.
Next is a Greek Concordance with every Greek word given with its English counterpart's Strong Concordance number. Three are several other helps included in this volume including the Strong Bible Dictionary.
You can spend hours, days, months, and years in this book and never use it up completely. There is just so much here for the student of the New Testament who wants to go beyond a surface reading of the English translation. There isn't anything wrong with English translations. It is just that this book will give you a richer understanding the choices the editors of your favorite translation made in putting the Greek original into our tongue.
I am grateful to have this on my bookshelf.
Good Buy!!! Feb 25, 2002
This is a good buy! Kind of a poor man's BAGD (Top of the line Greek Lexicon).
This book goes great with McReynold's Greek-English Word Study interlinear NT. A great combination because McReynold's interlinear has the Strong's # above each greek word in the interlinear, so you can use that number with this Dictionary to get a very throroughl Word Study. (McReynold's also has a Word Study which is much briefer, but in ways more useful and user frienly than this comprhensive Word Study.
All in all, this book and McReynold's make a great team when used together!!!
I would not recommend going with Zodh's other book (Zodh's NT)-- It has no greek interlinear and uses the KJV.
An incredible resource for in-depth bible study. Feb 15, 2002
Imagine the Greek lexicon from your Strong's concordance on steroids. That's right. Zodhiates takes the Strong's Greek lexicon and amplifies it a hundredfold in terms of detail. An entry that might receive just a few lines of fine print in Strong's is instead expanded to whole columns or pages of discussion, with every conceivable nuance explored. Grammatical variations, derivations, synonyms and antonyms, and both lexical and scriptural cross-references are added to make this a truly invaluable study aid.
I cannot overstate my gratitude to the author for this immensely useful and insightful volume. This book is the perfect companion to your Strong's Exhaustive Concordance, because its entries are directly keyed to the Strong's numbering system.
In a nutshell, if you are at all serious about bible study, or think you will be or want to be, this resource will be of great assistance in your efforts. Keep in mind that this is only the new testament lexicon. The author also has a separate word study dictionary for the old testament. If you find this helpful, also check out the author's interlinear new testament or Jay Green's interlineal bible.
a monumental work Jun 2, 2000
For the beginning Bible student, I would recommend getting this dictionary sometime after getting Strong's, a Bible dictionary, and Vine's. It will give you a little more depth than Vine's, and the entry titles are written in Greek so that you can practice recognition of the alphabet. But don't worry, you can still use this dictionary even if you do not know any Greek because it also has an English translation reference index (also a win-win situation, like Vine's.)
It is coded to Strong's just in case you really cannot find a particular word. You can compare the definitions of words with Vine's to get a second opinion, or you can just use it as a stand-alone reference. And not only are the words defined, but the author also gives you a lot of background information on important or difficult topics that you will not find in other dictionaries. This Word Study Dictionary, Strong's, a Bible Dictionary and Vine's will make an awesome start for your library. A ton of information here - a monumental work.
