Item Description... Overview This respected volume is the Old Testament counterpart to Colin Brown's New International Dictionary of the New Testament Theology.
Publishers Description Only one hermeneutical text published prior to the New International Dictionary of Old Testament Theology & Exegesis can be held up reasonably to its measure of quality and the exhaustive nature of the research that produced this immense work. That singular collection worthy of comparison is its counterpart, the New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology, edited by Colin Brown. This 5 volume addition to that acclaimed work, though intimidating in the achievement it embodies, is intended for serious Old Testament and exegetical study by men and women of all walks of life -- both academics and pastors, students and laypersons. Volume one contains a Guide to Old Testament Theology and Exegesis in which ten essays have been compiled to thoroughly explain proper hermeneutics and interpretation, as well as guidelines for using this source material. Volumes one through four contain the Lexicon of the Old Testament, all words found in the text ordered by Hebrew alphabetization for easy reference, and coupled with a Goodrick / Kohlenberger cross-referencing number to be used in conjunction with Strong's numbering system. The relationship of each word in different contexts and languages is also explained, including alternative words, and the particulars of their semantic domain. All this information is, of course, complete with bibliography. Volume four also begins the Topical Dictionary. Therein can be found articles on the theology of each Old Testament book individually, as well as discussion of biblical concepts, people, places, events, and literary pieces, all information that is cross-referenced to the preceding Hebraic Lexicon. Finally, volume five contains a series of indexes: Hebrew Index, Scripture Index, Subject Index, and an index of Semantic Fields. Taken as a whole, the New International Dictionary of Old Testament Theology & Exegesis is an unparalleled accomplishment in the field of biblical hermeneutics. |

Reviews - What do our customers think?
 | NOT ONE I WOULD BUY AGAIN Mar 28, 2010 |
This review is abt the 5-volume set, not the CD-ROM. This set has some excellent entries but a lot of the time they are very difficult to find, if it has them at all. The problem with the set is that a person should be able to find the Strong's or GK number in the index, then go to the page where it is found, & see some kind of entry. However many words are not dealt with & there is no indication of that until you go the the page & see the word skipped. Sometimes you can find a word by looking at the verse index, sometimes not. It is really frustrating to desire more information on a particular word & find out that a $100+ work doesn't even list it as being there. Each Hebrew word should have been in the entries, even if the authors felt that only a simple definition was necessary. In those cases, a note such as a "*" next to the listing in the index should be there so the searcher knows that only a definition will be found. If this had been done, my rating would be at least 4* if not higher.
I notice that most of the other reviews disagree (that's OK), but I think that for many students of Bible Hebrew, one of the good lexicons and/or the THEOLOGICAL WORDBOOK OF THE OLD TESTAMENT would suffice. The CD-ROM may be easier to use, but I am not familiar with it so can't somment. | | | | NIDOTTE Feb 4, 2010 |
| After using this resource repeatedly since receiving it I recommend it for those who wish to understand the fuller meanings of Hebrew and Aramaic words translated by the NIV translaters. Some times it is difficult to use an English word to capture the full meaning of a Hebrew of Aramaic word and this resource helps give the fuller meaning. | | | | Great Resource Nov 30, 2009 |
| This is a valuable resource for any serious student of the Bible. It's also a great preaching and teaching tool to unearth those "hidden" treasures. | | | | An essential resource Apr 21, 2009 |
| NIDOTTE is absolutely essential to the proper study of the Hebrew text of the Old Testement. The key to effective preaching of the OT is starting with the Hebrew text, translating it for yourself, and understanding the breadth of meaning of the words, so their precise contextual meaning can be determined. Word studies are integral to this process and NIDOTTE is indespensible in the process. If you are a pastor and its not in your library (or you don't otherwise have access to it) you are not properly outfitted for ministry. | | | | Superb aid for understanding the Old Testament Oct 5, 2001 |
| The electronic format comes into its own with multi-volume works. Having a 5 volume dictionary on CD ROM is much more convenient than having to juggle with bulky books [much as I love the codex!] If you have used the Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament, you will appreciate having this up-to-date, more comprehensive dictionary. Also included with the excellent lexical entries are articles about how to do Old Testament exegesis and stimulating introductions to the theology of each Old Testament book. | | | Write your own review about New International Dictionary Of Old Test Theo & Ex
